Our History
The first Hatchett Family Reunion began with the simple idea of gathering our kin to reminisce over the past as the physical distances between members grew. Betty Lee Hatchett, Frank E. Hatchett and R.E. Eubanks came up with the idea hosting a single-day picnic on a hot July afternoon. Back then, there were no emails or websites, just telephones and word of mouth to call the family members back home to Cotton Plant, Arkansas.
Planning was done in the true spirit of family; everyone contributed what they had. Fried chicken, baked chicken, peas, okra, cakes and pies all poured in from those in attendance. Betty Lee coordinated the kitchen and was the official cook. Fish was fried fresh in a wash pot outside by Jerome Farmer, Sr., while Frank Hatchett Sr. rounded off the meal with fresh watermelon from Little Rock. R. E. Eubanks satisfied everybody’s sweet tooth with pound cakes.
The event drew in family members from right there in Cotton Plant, Newport and Little Rock. Family members from across the United States, including: Los Angeles, Detroit and Chicago also joined the reunion. Programming was simple for the pioneers knew that all they needed was to get some Hatchetts together and the event was on. They kept one item on the agenda: Frank Hatchetts led the family in prayer. For they knew, as we do today, that the family that prays together, stays together.
